The short answer
Meta AI is free, already inside WhatsApp, and better on a phone than anything Grais ships today. If the job is polishing one message, use it. Grais is for the other job: one relationship carried across five apps, memory of what was promised, and a send-trust level you set per contact.
- Pick Meta AI when
- Pick Meta AI if you message from a phone and want free, already-installed help answering a question, catching up on unread threads, or rewriting a draft.
- Pick Grais when
- Pick Grais if the same people recur across WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder and you need the assistant to remember what was said and promised.

Where they win
Where Meta AI is the stronger pick
Meta AI costs nothing. The assistant in WhatsApp is free, Writing Help is free, and for the job most people actually have, which is making one message land better, there is no bill. Grais starts with 20 free actions a week, then Core at $29 a month. No amount of feature depth closes that gap for someone who wants a single sentence fixed with no weekly cap.
It also runs where messaging actually happens. Writing Help works inside the WhatsApp app on iOS and Android, with nothing to install and one Private Processing toggle in Settings to turn it on. Grais is a desktop extension for Chrome, Brave, Edge and Arc. Its iOS build is TestFlight and waitlist rather than the App Store, with no Firefox or Safari version and no mobile browser support. If you message from a phone, Meta AI works today and Grais mostly does not.
Writing Help is also more capable than the shorthand suggests. It can generate suggested messages based on your recent conversation, so it does read the thread you are sitting in. Separately, once you have typed four or more words, you tap and hold the draft, choose Rewrite, and pick Rephrase, Professional, Funny, Supportive or Proofread. It supports English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish, and is off by default.
The privacy design deserves describing on its own terms. Writing Help runs through Private Processing inside a Trusted Execution Environment. The request travels encrypted from your device to that environment, and Meta states it does not retain access to or store the messages or response after the request completes. NCC Group and Trail of Bits have published audits of the technology.
Anyone can type @Meta AI in a group and it answers for everyone. Grais works in that same group chat, but drafts your reply rather than posting to the room. Message Summaries, images, stickers, voice and web search sit in the same assistant. Grais claims none of those extras.
- You message from a phone. Writing Help is native on iOS and Android. Grais has no mobile browser support.
- The job is one message. A quick answer or a tone fix is free in WhatsApp and needs no install.
- The whole group needs the answer. @Meta AI posts into the group so everyone sees it. Grais works there too, but drafts your reply instead.
The difference
What Grais does differently
Grais is aimed at a different unit of work. Not the message on screen, but the person behind it. You open a real conversation on WhatsApp Web, Telegram Web, Instagram, LinkedIn or Tinder, and Grais reads that thread and drafts the reply with everything it already knows about that relationship.
The honest axis of difference is the shape of the memory, and it follows from Meta design choices rather than from any oversight. Private Processing stores nothing once a request completes, so Writing Help is stateless on purpose. Meta AI memory, separately, covers what you tell the assistant in one-to-one chats with it, not group chats, and it never sees your conversations with other people. So Meta AI can remember you. It cannot remember your relationship with a specific person, because it never holds that relationship. Grais does hold it: who said what, what was promised, and what matters, carried across conversations, channels and time.
Promise tracking is usually the piece people notice first, because commitments are what go missing. Grais remembers what was committed to whom and brings it back when it is due. Around that it reads intent, tone and stakes, plans multi-turn sequences with fallbacks, and flags when a person goes quiet.
Sending is governed one contact at a time rather than globally. Trust starts at review, and can grow to voice approval and then to known-safe autonomy for that specific person, and Grais does not send a message or change anything without the trust level you set for that contact. Meta AI has no equivalent, because it does not need one: you pick a suggestion and send it yourself, the same way every time.
Channels are the other split. Grais covers WhatsApp Web, Telegram Web, Instagram, LinkedIn and Tinder in one place and recognises the same person across them. Meta AI covers Meta apps and devices, a far larger audience but a narrower map if your week runs through LinkedIn and Telegram. The limits stay on the label: Chromium desktop only, iOS on TestFlight, Mac planned rather than shipped.
Also worth knowing
Using both, and what Meta has announced
The two collide less than the question suggests. Meta AI is free and native on the phone in your hand. Grais runs in a desktop browser across five apps. A workable split: Writing Help handles the quick tone fix on WhatsApp mobile, and Grais handles the threads where something was agreed and needs remembering three weeks later.
Meta is not standing still either. On 13 May 2026, WhatsApp announced Side Chat, described as private help with any chat, with context of what is being discussed, protected by Private Processing. As of 18 August 2026, the fact-check date on this page, it had not shipped and WhatsApp had published no help centre article. It is worth watching. It is not something you can use today.

FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Is AI already built into WhatsApp?
Yes, and it is genuinely useful. Meta AI answers when you type @Meta AI, summarises unread threads, and Writing Help suggests replies based on your recent conversation or rewrites a draft you typed. What it does not do is carry that context forward. Private Processing stores nothing once a request finishes, so the next message starts from zero.
Is Meta AI free?
Meta AI in WhatsApp is free, and Writing Help costs nothing. Meta announced Meta One Plus at $7.99 a month and Meta One Premium at $19.99 a month on 27 May 2026, with testing beginning in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia rather than a general release. Those tiers raise compute limits rather than unlocking features, and the free tier remains.
Does Writing Help know what my conversation is about?
Yes. WhatsApp says Writing Help can generate suggested messages based on your recent conversation, and that you need a few messages in the chat history for suggestions to appear. The limit is that this happens inside a single Private Processing request which retains nothing afterwards, so the context is gone again by the next message.
Can Meta AI remember what I promised someone?
No. Meta AI memory covers what you tell the assistant in one-to-one chats with it, not group chats, and it never sees your conversations with other people. Grais is built around the opposite trade: it holds who said what and what was committed to whom, per relationship, across conversations and channels.
Why pay $29 a month when WhatsApp already has AI?
If the job is polishing one message on your phone, do not. Meta AI is free, already installed, and better on mobile than anything Grais ships today. Paying makes sense when the same people recur across WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Telegram, Instagram and Tinder, and you need commitments remembered and send trust set per contact.
